Anche se come abbiamo visto i giocatori nelle prime posizioni sono svantaggiati rispetto a quelli che parlano dopo di loro, ci sono alcune strategie che possono utilizzare legate alla loro posizione e che gli altri giocatori non possono attuare. Una di queste strategie è il check raise. Un giocatore in early position può fare check raise per far mettere più soldi nel piatto per cercare di far foldare dei giocatori se è stato un giocatore in late position che ha fatto la prima puntata sul flop. Poiché il check-raise è uno dei pochi vantaggi di cui godono i giocatori nelle early positions, dovrebbero usarla di solito se ci sembra probabile che il giocatore in ultima posizione rilanci sempre quando tutti gli hanno fatto check davanti.
Un’altra strategia che il primo giocatore a parlare può attuare è quella di provare un bluff per primo. Se in una mano gli altri giocatori hanno mostrato debolezza, il primo giocatore a parlare ha la possibilità di bluffare al turno successivo. Per esempio due giocatori dopo di noi fanno semplice call (limpers), il piccolo buio folda e tu fai check da BB.

Il piccolo buio è la posizione peggiore, perché ad eccezione del primo turno tutti parlano prima di lui. Se anche tutti foldano ai bui, il piccolo buio ha un grosso svantaggio rispetto al grande buio. Molte volte il grande buio può chiamare un rilancio con una mano marginale, cosa che il piccolo buio non può fare. Il motivo è che il piccolo buio deve aggiungere più soldi nel piatto ed il big blind ha migliori odds. Poiché è già nel piatto con il piccolo buio (mezza bet), quando c’è un rilancio (2BB) ha pot odds 3.5 a 1 per chiamare (una per quello che ha già messo nel piatto, 2 BB da chi ha rilanciato, e mezzo BB dal piccolo). Se ci sono altri giocatori nella mano le odds per il grande buio migliorano anche di più. Anche il piccolo buio ha migliori odds rispetto agli altri giocatori (tranne il BB), tuttavia la sua posizione lo pone in grosso svantaggio perché deve agire prima del grande buio. Dovrebbe mettere 1.5 BB per vedere un raise del Grande buio e gli fa peggiorare le odds!
Il Grande Buio come abbiamo visto, può chiamare un raise anche con mani marginali dato che ha odds 3.5 a 1 o migliori (ad esempio con dei suited connectors). La sua posizione dopo il flop però è piuttosto debole e quindi deve valutare se entrare nel piatto nonostante le buone odds.
